Evaluating Used Racing Parts

One of the most challenging tasks to selling used racing parts is knowing what is still in usable condition and what should be sent to the recycle center. The shear volume of used parts flowing through our shop puts a lot of pressure on the incoming inspection group. However, we have a distinct advantage that many do not and that is our team members at both the engine shop and those back at Roush-Fenway Racing. The guys who disassemble the cars and the engines are trained to evaluate and test parts to see if they are good enough to continue on to the next race. If there is even a slight question as to the possibility of a failure of a component, even if there are no visible signs of issues, the part is retired. If the component was involved in a wreck, bent or damaged, we do not take a chance in selling it to the public and the part is recycled.

When the used engine and chassis parts are brought to our shop, we examine each item for damage and if we do not feel comfortable selling the item it will go to the recycle center. When parts pass the incoming inspection they are cleaned, tagged with a part number, entered into the computer and then placed on the shelf for customers to purchase. We do perform all of the sorting of recyclable items for the engine shop at our facility so our staff is very knowledgeable in spotting a damaged crankshaft, connecting rod or cylinder head.

One of the side benefits we have by selling new racing items to NASCAR teams is that we know the cost of new items. We also have a relationship with the manufacturer and know very well what they look like when they are new. Also knowing how important each item is goes a long way into evaluating the condition of a used part. If a new part is modified for any reason by the chassis shop it will be very evident during incoming inspection. A quick phone call back to the chassis shop will confirm why the parts were modified and if it was done on purpose or the result of wear or damage from the track.

Finally, we take great pride in our used parts and we want you to know that each part goes through several levels of inspection before it is even available for purchase. If you have never purchased a used racing item from us give us a try, we are sure you will be satisfied with your purchase.
