Under The Hood With Doug Yates – Freescale Racing Part 1

June 28, 2012

Life is full of unexpected pleasures and rewards – and good news. That’s why many of us wake up each morning with full contemplation that we’re going to do good; thinking good things are looming around every corner; and at the end of the day we become a better and wiser for having made it through yet another day with, if nothing else, learning and life experience accumulated.

No more have I felt this than after what I experienced this past week in San Antonio at the Freescale Technology Forum.

I guess you might say that I am one of those lucky persons who’s had the honor and privilege of being partnered with some really great companies during my career in the NASCAR racing industry. Over the past three decades while either being the son of a NASCAR race team owner, NASCAR team owner, or an engine builder, solid corporate and personal relationships have always fueled my energy and desire to win. It’s just so important to get behind and understand the mission of my corporate partners one hundred percent. Because we learn – that helps my company and my employees.

When Freescale Semiconductor a few months ago invited me to participate in the 2012 Freescale Technology Forum, I was naturally eager to attend – even though I wasn’t quite sure what I’d be seeing or how I’d participate as their Roush Yates Engines partner. As the event neared, I would begin to day-by-day gain more insight as to what this “FTF” was all about.

Let me just cut to the chase: I was and will be for quite some time – blown away by what I witnessed.

When three thousand five-hundred of the world’s greatest technical minds converge on one little piece of earth in the Texas hill country over four days – something big and unexpected SHOULD BE EXPECTED.

A lot of people hear the word “no” when looking to go into a certain new business or pursue a game-changing avenue to fix a certain problem. After FTF, I came away with wanting to find every reason to say “yes” at Roush Yates Engines.

Here’s why. The founder and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, Peter Diamandis, graced the general session with a keynote address that opened up for me a whole new world that is out there and that the future has never looked brighter. My take away from Peter’s hour on that stage was that we’re at a great convergence of new and exciting technologies meeting up with exponential growth in connected intelligence that will positively change the world in ways most of us have never even imagined.

My next entry will address some of the amazing things that Peter and his Foundation are doing – which are inspiring me to challenge my own employees at Roush Yates in terms of pure innovation and while seeking ancillary benefits that could possibly change the way we do things – for the common good.

Brown, Dover, and Johnson Win on Dirt

June 25, 2012

Mooresville, NC (June 25, 2012)  Roush Yates’ dirt engine programs continue to grow with more and more racers utilizing Roush Yates engines and technology throughout the country. Three dirt drivers found Victory Lane this weekend with their Roush Yates Ford and Chevy engines.

Chris Brown captured his second win of the 2012 season with his Roush Yates 410 Chevy engine at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, MO on Saturday night. Brown earned the pole position and survived heavy lapped traffic to lead all 50 laps and capture the USTMS National Championship Series victory by the length of his bumper (0.095 second margin of victory).

“It was a great race and a great race track,” said Brown in Victory Lane. “I wish I could have seen what was going on behind me because it had to be one heck of a race.”

Brown will go back to work on Tuesday at Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, IA for the first of five straight nights of racing during the USMTS Summer Swing.

Jack Dover continues to blow away the competition, winning another ASCS Midwest sprint series race on Friday night with his Roush Yates Sprint 360 Ford engine. Dover started eighth in the main feature at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE and quickly moved up to second behind Don Droud Jr. With one lap to go, Dover was able to easily pass Droud and capture his fourth win of the season.

Jason Johnson, driver for Stenhouse Jr. Racing, earned his fifth Lucas Oil ASCS victory of the season this weekend at Salina Highbanks in Salina, OK with his Roush Yates Sprint 360 Ford engine. Johnson drew the pole starting position and battled fellow contender Johnny Herrera most of the race before Herrera’s engine expired with one lap to go. Johnson’s victory brought him to second in the Lucas Oil ASCS Championship Standings.

Roush Yates’ FR9 engines captured poles in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and ARCA Racing Series this weekend. Marcos Ambrose, driver of the No. 9 for Richard Petty Motorsports, earned the pole at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA while Chris Buescher qualified fastest at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, IN.

Kyle Busch Wins at Eldora with Roush Yates Engine

June 7, 2012

Mooresville, NC (June 7, 2012)  Kyle Busch drove an unfamiliar power plant through the field during Wednesday night’s Prelude to the Dream Late Model dirt race at Eldora Speedway to earn his first victory at Tony Stewart’s track.

Busch was driving the car and engine of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Champion Scott Bloomquist in the charity race that benefits Feed The Children. Bloomquist is a Roush Yates engine and performance products customer that has won four races so far this season. Stewart, promoter of the event, finished second.

“Whether you beat Tony Stewart or whether you beat Jimmy Johnson or whoever, it’s still a lot of fun to race this race,” said Busch. “Tony has turned this into a huge ordeal.”

Busch won the race by staying out of trouble and having one of the fastest cars on the track. Wrecks took out 11 cars of the 26 car field, leaving only 15 cars for the final restart. Fellow Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne was leading until he ran into Bobby Labonte after a spin in turn three. Busch was running second at the time and capitalized on the opportunity en route to winning the 40-lap race.

“I felt like our car’s always been the best car in the long run, especially through traffic,” said Busch. “It was definitely exciting getting through traffic. That’s what makes this place fun.”

Bloomquist will be back in the car for the Dream at Eldora on Saturday night.

Bloomquist Wins at Tazewell, Sets Track Record

June 4, 2012

Mooresville, NC (June 4, 2012)  Roush Yates engines had a fast weekend on the track, capturing wins and setting track records with drivers Scott Bloomquist, Greg Satterlee, and Tim Isenburg on the Dirt Late Model circuit.

Bloomquist swept the night’s activities at Tazewell Speedway on Sunday by setting the track record in time trials with a lap of 10.822 seconds, winning his heat, and dominating the feature to win his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race of the season. Leading all 50 laps, Bloomquist held off Don O’Neal for most of the race in Tazewell, TN to capture the win.

“The car was just phenomenal tonight,” said Bloomquist. “The Roush Yates Engine ran perfect and the car handled so well, right from hot laps on. I want to thank my crew, sponsors, and everybody with my race team. Hopefully we can get on a roll again.”

The win marked Bloomquist’s 45th of his Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series career and moved him to third in the championship standings. Bloomquist drives a Roush Yates powered Ford 436 Dirt Late Model engine.

Tim Isenberg found Victory Lane twice this weekend with his 410 Ford Roush Yates Dirt Late Model engine, once at Mississippi Thunder Speedway (Fountain City, WI) and once at Lafayette County Speedway in Darlington. Isenberg led the majority of Friday night’s Corn Belt Clash in Fountain City and held off a hard-charging Jimmy Mars (also running a Roush Yates engine) to capture his first victory on the tour.

“I love racing with the series and to get my first series win over my car builder made it sweeter,” said Isenberg. “The series has some great competition and strong talent and this was a great win on a great track.”

Greg Satterlee found power with his Ford 436 Dirt Late Model engine on Sunday night at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, IN. Satterlee out dueled series regulars Dan Stone and Jason Covert to win his first speedweek event. This is Satterlee’s fifth win of the season in his first year driving a Roush Yates engine.

Roush Yates has posted 62 wins so far this season in 9 different engine programs. To learn more about Roush Yates and Roush Yates Performance Products, visit us online at www.roushyatesparts.com or call 1-877-798-RYPP.
